            An original antique watercolour painting by the English artist James Holmes (177-1860), Fisher Girls by the Sea painted in 1825. This work has been exhibited in Mexico City in 2021 at 'Hidden Treasures of Victorian Art'. A digital copy of the exhibition catalogue can be supplied to the buyer, on request. This work is unframed and will be delivered flat. 

James Holmes was an oil and watercolour artist of figurative, portrait and miniature works. He was apprenticed to the well known engraver Robert Mitchell Meadows at an early age. He attended the Royal Academy School for 1796 and exhibited at the Royal Academy 21 times from 1798 until 1849, In 1813 he became a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, exhibiting twice. In 1824 he became a founding member of the Society of British Artists and a frequent exhibitor until 1850. Holmes painted George IV and the two developed a personal relationship, they played music together, Holmes was a talented flautist.

Today Holmes's works can be found in the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum, both in London.

The glass in this painting has been replaced with clear acrylic, virtually indistinguishable from glass, this is for safety during shipping and to reduce weight when hanging.
