Vintage Weighted Staunton Chess Set – Boxwood and Ebonised Wood – Complete 32 Pieces – c.1920–1950.

A handsome and complete vintage Staunton-pattern chess set, comprising 32 traditional wooden chessmen in natural boxwood and contrasting ebonised wood, housed in a fitted wooden storage box.

Probably dating from the first half of the 20th century, this attractive set follows the classic Staunton design, with substantial weighted bases, finely turned profiles and individually carved knights.

The kings stand approximately 8.5 cm (3⅜ inches) high and retain their traditional cross finials. The queens have decorative coronet tops, while the bishops feature characteristic mitred heads and the rooks have crenellated castle tops.

The knights are particularly appealing, with expressive carved horse heads, prominent muzzles, defined manes and broad turned bases.

All 32 chessmen are present, comprising 16 natural boxwood pieces and 16 ebonised pieces. The bases are weighted and covered with green felt, providing stability during play and helping protect a chessboard.

The set is accompanied by a rectangular wooden storage box with dovetailed corner joints, a hinged lid, metal fastening and internal wooden divider separating the two opposing armies.

Historical Interest

The Staunton chess pattern was introduced in England in 1849 and rapidly became the internationally recognised standard for chessmen. Its balanced proportions and clearly distinguishable pieces made it especially popular for serious and competitive play.

This set represents a traditional interpretation of that celebrated design, combining practical weighted construction with the craftsmanship of turned and carved wooden chess pieces.

An appealing addition to a collection of vintage chess sets, traditional board games or historical gaming accessories, equally suitable for display or regular play.
