A handheld ophthalmic cryotherapy unit (a Keeler eye cryoprobe set), used for freezing ocular tissue during retinal and anterior‑segment surgery, dating from around the 1960s.
What it is and how it was used
Keeler has long produced ophthalmic cryosurgical equipment, this set has a cylindrical knurled handle, screw‑on tips of different profiles, and looped metal tool, the probe is cooled by rapid gas expansion transmitted from a separate console via a hose connection at the top of the handle.
Age / dating
Keeler was founded in 1917, but their cryosurgical lines expand alongside modern retinal surgery from the mid‑20th century.This set is offered as a collectable curiosity only and not for practical use.
The case measures 16 x 7.5cm (6.3" x 3").
