A beautiful Victorian mahogany apothecary case, dating from approximately 1850–1860, with a red velvet-lined interior and fitted side drawer.

The hinged lid opens to reveal three stoppered glass bottles, including a larger example labelled “Ol. Ricini”, the Latin pharmaceutical name for castor oil. The side drawer holds two smaller bottles, a brass balance with weights and a small circular box. A glass mortar and pestle completes the group. The bottles are all empty of content.

The warm mahogany, brass fittings and richly coloured lining make this an appealing display piece for a collection of antique pharmacy objects or scientific curiosities.

• Mahogany case with brass fittings and a key

• Five glass bottles with stoppers

• Glass mortar and pestle

• Small brass balance and selection of weights

• Small circular box

Condition:

The case shows minor scratches, marks and wear consistent with age. The red velvet fabric interior shows some marks and wear. The metal fittings have an aged patina, and the glass shows signs of historical use.
