Victorian Games Compendium with turned Boxwood & Ebony Chess Set, c.1880

A handsome late‑19th‑century English games compendium, complete with a full set of finely turned boxwood and ebony chessmen and other traditional parlour games.

The solid mahogany casket opens at the front and sides to reveal two hinged doors and a central rack displaying all thirty‑two chess pieces in readiness for play. Inside the fitted top are divided compartments containing turned draughts / backgammon counters and dice cups – a charming survivor from the great age of Victorian parlour gaming.

The chessmen are particularly attractive: warm honey‑coloured boxwood for White and rich black ebony for Black, with elegant baluster pawns, stout rooks and expressive knights; each piece sits on a pin in the box to keep it in place. The set is complete and ready to use – ideal for both serious play and decorative display. Please note minor chips to four of the black pieces, some small surface marks on some of the white pieces. There are 22 black and 22 white counters both in two sizes, mostly, but not all, polished finish.
