An exquisite survivor of mid-Victorian publishing, this monumental Family Bible (c.1864) represents the height of Cassell, Petter, and Galpin’s craftsmanship. Bound in a striking full Morocco leather with intricate gilt tooling and deep-lustre gilt edges, this volume was designed as a "statement piece" for the 19th-century home.
What sets this specific copy apart is the pristine, blank Family Register. While most 19th-century Bibles are filled with historical records, this volume offers a "fresh start" for a modern family to record their own history of Births, Marriages, and Deaths, just as intended over 160 years ago.
Richly Illustrated: Contains more than nine hundred highly finished wood engravings, including full-page plates that bring the biblical narrative to life with dramatic Victorian detail. There are some colour inserts of a later date.
Explanatory Apparatus: Includes extensive critical notes, references, and a condensed concordance—a true "study Bible" of its era.
Binding: Full red morocco with raised bands and ornate gilt decoration to the spine and boards, minor wear to extremities.
Condition: Internally clean with only minor age-appropriate toning. The binding remains tight and the gilt edges retain their original brilliance.
Provenance: Dated by comparison to the Rochester Cathedral archive copy (1864).
A magnificent centrepiece for a library or a legacy gift for a new generation.
The Bible measures 32.7 x 26 x 12cm (approximately 13" x 10" x 5") and weighs 7kg (approximately 15lb).
