An imposing Victorian family Bible, published by James S. Virtue of London and New York, circa 1860–1865.
Measuring approximately 38 × 30 × 13 cm and weighing 10.8 kg, this is a substantial volume with considerable presence. Its dark leather binding features decorative blind tooling, gilt borders and a banded spine lettered “Holy Bible”. Colourful marbled endpapers complete its traditional Victorian appearance.
Entitled The Holy Bible with a Devotional and Practical Commentary, the work combines the biblical text with commentary by the Rev. Robert Jamieson and the Rev. Edward Henry Bickersteth. The pages include centre-column references and extensive explanatory notes.
A particularly attractive feature is the selection of detailed steel-engraved illustrations, including Miriam, Moses in the Bulrushes, Joseph’s Coat Brought to Jacob, Moses at the Burning Bush, and the Madonna and Child, plates retain their protective tissue guards.
The illustrated family register contains later handwritten entries relating to the Oram family, adding a personal connection to the generations who have kept and used the volume.
