A substantial and historically significant surgical instrument set housed in its original, heavy solid mahogany case. This professional-grade kit was produced by the legendary Irish firm William Read, Cutlers to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
The set features a comprehensive array of instruments, most notably a rare tooth pelican—a primitive and highly sought-after dental extraction tool with additional fitments—and two complete trepanning (skull surgery) tools. The majority of the instruments retain their original, fine ebony handles and marked 'Read". Also includes several tourniquets.
The Read family of Dublin operated for over two centuries (c. 1670–1900) from their famous premises at 4 Parliament Street. As the premier surgical instrument makers in Ireland, Read was synonymous with innovation and quality, frequently winning awards at international exhibitions. Owning a Read set is owning a piece of the "Golden Age" of the Dublin School of Medicine.
Key Features:
Specialised Instruments: Includes a tooth pelican, two trephines (trepanning saws), large amputation saws, and various liston-style surgical knives.
Materials: Polished steel, brass, and hand-carved ebony.
The Case: Solid mahogany with original handles, both very similar but slightly different.
Condition & Rarity:
While a few minor items are missing from the fitted trays, the "primary" instruments are largely present and in good antique condition. The interior velvet lining shows an authentic level of wear and fading consistent with its age and professional history, adding to its character as a genuine survivor of the Victorian medical era.
The House of Read is one of the oldest and most prestigious names in Irish commercial history, established in 1670 at Blind Quay (now Exchange Street) before moving to its iconic home at 4 Parliament Street in 1762.
For over two centuries, the firm served as the premier Cutlers to the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. While many London makers mass-produced instruments, Read maintained a reputation for bespoke, high-quality craftsmanship that catered to the "Golden Age" of the Dublin School of Medicine. The shop at Parliament Street is so historically significant that it remains Dublin's oldest retail interior, featuring the same swan-neck pediment cabinets that likely once held a set exactly like this one.
The case measures 53.5 x 22 x 10xm (21" x 8.66" x 4").
Note for Collectors:
This set is sold strictly as a historical collectible and curiosity. It is not intended for, nor suitable for, any modern medical or practical use.
