A replica Portable Sundial. in a brass bound wooden case. The original would have been used during the latter half of the 16th century by explorers and navigators to tell the time anywhere in the world.

 

To tell the time the Gnomon, which casts the shadow, can be set for latitude using the sliding scale with the whole instrument being orientated in the meridian through the use of the compass in the base. With adjustable legs to ensure that the instrument is level.

 

The case measures 14 x 14x 5.6cm (5.5" x 5.5" x 2.2").
