A beautiful William IV companion set of the Holy Bible and the Book of Common Prayer, printed at the Oxford University Press by Samuel Collingwood & Co. in 1836 and still housed in its original fitted leather case.
The Holy Bible volume contains the Old and New Testaments in the classic King James Version, “translated out of the original tongues” and “appointed to be read in churches”. The matching Book of Common Prayer volume includes the full liturgy of the United Church of England and Ireland together with the Psalter or Psalms of David, as stated on the title‑page dated 1836.
Both books are bound in rich dark morocco leather with gilt titles to the spines, gilt page edges and yellow endpapers, and they slide neatly into a purpose‑made leather slip‑case, creating a compact devotional library that could be carried to church or on journeys. Sets that have survived complete with their original box are considered relatively uncommon compared with single Bibles or prayer books from the period.
This set offers not only a daily‑use Bible and Prayer Book but also a tangible link to Anglican worship in the reign of William IV, making it ideal for collectors of historic Bibles, clergy gifts, or anyone who loves fine Oxford printings.
Condition: interiors clean and legible with only light age‑toning and the occasional spot; bindings firm; some rubbing to leather at corners and case edges, but hinges sound and gilt still bright, with an old ink ownership signature to the endpapers. The Book of Prayer has a small section of loose pages, bound together but separated from the spine.
The book measures 15.2 x 10.5 x 8.6cm (6" x 4.13" x 3.4").
