Illuminated ecclesiastical manuscript created for the Archbishop of Canterbury Randall Davidson to commemorate his 50th wedding anniversary in 1928. The note attached to the reverse of the original frame reads:

'Illuminated Sonnet the handiwork of the late Mr H. L. Gordon, Resident at 13 Wester Coates Terrace.

"Lady Davidson, wife of Randall Davidson, Archbishop of Canterbury, was connected with my mother's family. On the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary (this is the reason for the mention in the poem of the "ten lustres", a lustre being 5 years) many presents were given to them. Mt father wrote the sonnet, my Uncle illuminated it, and my Mother and her sisters presented it to the Archbishop and Lady Davidson. The latter survived her husband, and when she died one of my Aunts secured the illumination for me. The Coats of Arms are partly of the Archbishop and Lady Davidson and partly of the Bishoprics that he had occupied."

Signed C. Bernard Gordon.'
