An elaborate writing slope from the Gothic Revival from around 1865 to 1885, the wood is ebonised with generous brass mounts, typical of the style. The box’s sloped form, ebonised finish and ornate pierced brass mounts are signature Victorian characteristics, inspired by earlier campaign and Gothic design trends. Brass-bound corners and decorative central cartouche became popular for both style and practicality, offering durability for travel and lending a fashionable appearance in the Victorian era.
 
The interior has a blue velvet writing slope, some breaks to the gilt leather border, a nice clean storage area below and undter the hinged flap at the top, the two original faceted glass inwells with silver plated lids, three storage sections with brass handles and a pen rest under which is another small storage area. The slope has a key that fits but does not operate the lock.
 
This a nice solid item, a stunning decorative piece which remains functional as a useable item, writing slopes of this type and style are rare.
