An original "Chart of the Gospels" (A Pictorial, Geographical, Chronological, and Historical Delineation...") by R. Mimpriss published by Sampson Low in London in 1833. A very large, hand-coloured, dissected and linen-backed folding map of the Holy Land, used for biblical scholarship and Sunday school instruction in the 19th century, with vignettes illustrating episodes from the life of Christ and extensive explanatory tables. The chart measures 1.31 x .89m (4'4" x 3').
Robert Mimpriss (1797–1875) was a key figure in the 19th-century "Sunday School Movement," and his charts and lesson plans were widely used in the UK and US to teach biblical history, especially in nonconformist and evangelical circles.
The chart is celebrated for its combination of, Biblical chronology and geography (routes and places mentioned in the Gospels), engraved pictorial vignettes and instructive text and coloured sections (by period or topic).
Dissected and mounted on cotton/linen to fold into a slipcase, making it portable for schools and churches.
The chart was first published in the early 1830s so this example is likely a first edition.
Surviving Mimpriss charts in this early, large, coloured, and slipcased format are rare indeed we are unable to find any other examples currently available.
The chart is in good condition with no repairs, the slipcase is original and similarly in good condition but with some rubbing to the corners.
