An imposing and rare "Campaign" style stationery cabinet by the renowned Army & Navy Co-operative Society Ltd. This large-format maker-marked box represents the pinnacle of Victorian organisational craft, designed for the rigorous demands of the British officer class.
This is an undisturbed estate lot, containing a remarkable array of intellectual and postal history. Nestled within its compartments is a complete two-volume set of Hester Chapone’s Letters on the Improvement of the Mind (1774), a foundational text in 18th-century female education.
Archive Highlights:
Philatelic Rarity: Includes an original Penny Blue stamp on a period document, with a franking stamp dated 1846.
Silver & Glass: Two cut-glass jars with hallmarked solid silver tops, stopper missing on one.
Personal Effects: A pair of antique gold-framed spectacles and an original boxwood ruler.
Primary Sources: A significant cache of 18th and 19th-century manuscript papers and correspondence including a document a two page legal document dated 1792, a copy of the London Gazette dated January 21st 1797, a book illustration page showing a Barometer dated 1797, a further four page legal document dated 1765 concerning the purchase of a Rectory and a beautifully written invoice in a copperplate script dated 1795.
Key: The original key is included, it works but is worn, this is a Brahma lock, designed to be impossible to pick and so locking is inadvisable.
Condition:
The cabinet retains its original lustre with minor age-appropriate wear to the edges. The internal fittings are intact, and the Army & Navy C.S.L. stamp remains crisp and clear, the pen tray lifts out to reveal a storage space beneath, the tray is a replacement.
The box measures 41 x 24 x 30.5cm (16" x 9.5" x 12").
