An antique writing slope dating from around 1880 including the original inkwells and some rare antique documents. The box is inlaid with brass strip and mother of pearl decoration. Inside the writing surface is green with impressed gold borders and the two original inkwells with silver plated copper lids, there is some wear to the silver plate on one lid, the writing slope is cut along the crease. There is a key which fits but does not turn the lock. 

 

The documents include an addressed envelope with Penny Red stamp addressed to 'The Lady Katherine Hamilton Royal' Lady Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton (1840–1874) was the daughter of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn, a court figure and lady‑in‑waiting, the 'Royal' refers to her status rather than being part of her name. 

An invoice dated 1791 and eight sequential pages from The London Gazette dated 1795.

 

This is a really beautiful box, an elegant functional item which is decorative too.

 

The box measures 35.2x 23 x 12.3cm (13.86" x 9.06" x 4.84").
