A stunning example of late-Victorian craftsmanship, this exquisite handmade mahogany marquetry box is a celebration of the musical arts. Dating to circa 1890, the lid features an intricate, multi-wood "Musical Trophy" inlay that is truly the centrepiece of the item.
The Design:
The lid is masterfully inlaid with a central Lute and Flute resting upon a musical score, framed by a delicate geometric border. The use of contrasting fruitwoods creates a wonderful sense of depth and shadow, showcasing the skill of the 19th-century artisan. In the language of 19th-century decorative arts, this "Musical Trophy" symbolised a love for the arts and was often given as a gift to a lady of high standing or a talented musician.
This is an "Arts and Crafts" era treasure, perfect for housing jewellery, letters, or sheet music accessories. The warm, honey-toned patina of the wood has aged beautifully over the last 130 years, giving it a soft, satiny glow that modern reproductions simply cannot replicate.
Features:
Period: Late Victorian c. 1890.
Artistry: Hand-cut marquetry (Intarsia) featuring various natural fruitwoods.
