Rev. John Brown of Haddington (1722–1787) was a prominent Scottish minister, theological professor, and author. Born into poverty in Perthshire, Scotland, he was orphaned by the age of eleven. Largely self-educated while working as a shepherd, he remarkably taught himself classical languages like Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. He served as the minister of the Burgher branch of the Secession Church in Haddington from 1750 until his death. He was a prolific writer known for his deep piety and learning, with his most famous work being Brown's Self-Interpreting Bible alongside his Dictionary of the Bible.
