A quintessential piece of Victorian social history, this compact writing slope is a masterclass in portable elegance. Measuring a versatile 30 cm in width, this "lap desk" was designed for the Victorian traveler, featuring robust brass-bound corners and flush-fitting brass hardware to survive the journeys of the 19th century, the cartouche is vacant and the key plate a replacement. The interior opens to reveal a traditional sloped writing surface, a dedicated pen tray, and its rare, original square glass inkwell with a secure brass lid. The wood possesses a deep, honeyed patina that only comes with a century and a half of careful use. Whether utilised as a functional stationery box or displayed as a centre piece of a library, this slope is a complete and evocative survivor. The key fits but does not work the lock. The base is covered in green baize.

The box measures 30 x 23 x 14cm (11.81" x 9.06" x 5.5").
