A rare and imposing example of Victorian strategy gaming. This deluxe Travel Halma set features a large-format folding mahogany case that opens to a precision-drilled 256-square grid. Unlike standard 64-square chess boards, this expansive 16x16 layout was designed for the complex "jumping" strategy game that swept through London in the late 19th century.

The set includes a substantial collection of 61 hand-turned bone pegged pieces in four classic colours: White, Black, Red, and Blue. The set features a complete 19-piece White team for professional 2-player matches and a complete 13-piece Red team for 4-player play. While some pieces from the Black (18) and Blue (11) teams have been lost to time, the sheer volume of original bone pieces and the exceptional quality of the mahogany board make this a premier find for the collector of antique games or high-end Victorian cabinetry.

Condition Report:
The mahogany board is in excellent antique condition with a deep, rich patina and original brass hardware, one brass closing clasp missing and surface marks to case exterior. The 256-square grid is crisp and well-aligned. The bone pieces are well-turned with vibrant original dyes; piece counts are 19 White, 18 Black, 13 Red, and 11 Blue. A truly tactile and impressive display piece.

The case measures 61 x 30.5 x 3.6cm when open, closing to 30 x 15 x 7.5cm, the chessboard squares each 1.7cm square.
