A Victorian travelling chess set in a folding mahogany box with a rosewood and satin squared chessboard and brass fitments. This type of board was known as a 'Whittington' portable chessboard with folding flaps. The pieces are plastic so added later. The box has been expertly made, in good functional condition and with a beautiful patina, the lids fold open outwards to reveal the board, the squares are 1.7cm (.75") square and the case measures 20.5 x 20.5cm (8" x 8") when open and excluding the lids on either side.
