A beautiful Rosewood Travel Box, with mother-of-pearl inlay, the interior lined in green with pull down letter holder, two pairs of bottles, lift out tray, and a box drawer plus many accessories.

A high quality antique Travel Box dating from the 19th century with many features, detailed below. This box has a quality look and feel to every part of it, the grain and patination throughout are exceptional. Moving to the interior the lid opens to reveal a quilted and padded green velvet lining to the lid with gilt leather border which folds down, inside is finished in green leather with a letter pouch and space for documents; there are a number of documents included which are detailed below. There are two pairs of bottles, two with silver plated lids, again original to the case, between these there is a pin cushion, with silver lapel pin, which lifts out to access the storage space below. In front of this there is a felt lined lift out pen tray containing pen nibs and below this two silver plated spoons on a padded green velvet base. Either side are two lidded recesses with Mother of Pearl handles, one containing some stamps and the other some worn Victorian pennies, the recesses retain remnants of foil lining and so may possibly have been used to hold tea, the handles at each side are used to lift out this section to access the space beneath which in turn contains a number of Victorian Magic Lantern slides, detailed below. The interior is finished in green leather, the Mother of Pearl escutchion is engraved "GJJ to HP" in a copperplate hand.

The box has campaign style brass handles to the side and the front as well as a Mother of Pearl Escutcheon for the key, the brass handle at the front pulls out a felt lined drawer with padded sections.

The key fits the lock and is original but is stiff.

The interior remains in near perfect condition, the exterior has some very minor losses to the edging and inlaid brass strip. otherwise in good solid and useable condition, the hinges are strong and firm.

There are quite a lot of original items included with the box, some already mentioned but others described in more detail here:

The documents are a letter dating from 1868 with a Penny Red stamp and letter, a four page legal letter dating from 1816, a four page release of legacy with wax seal dated 1765 and a 46 page booklet from 1815 concerning the Battle of Waterloo.

The six Magic Lantern slides are, three scenes from Puss in Boots, Buckingham Palace, a London cityscape looking towards St Pauls Cathedral and The Crystal Palace; all beautiful hand coloured examples.

This is a really beautiful and substantial Travel Box, an elegant functional item.

The box measures 31 x 20.5 x 16.5cm (12.2" x 8.07" x 6.5") w x d x h and weighs 4.4kg (9.7lbs).
