Antique Surgical Instrument Set – Complete Interchangeable Scalpel Set – Early 20th Century
An unusual and complete antique surgical instrument set, comprising a selection of interchangeable steel scalpel and surgical knife blades with their original clip-fitting handle, housed in a compact fitted metal case.
Probably dating from the early 20th century, circa 1900–1930, this fascinating historical medical set illustrates the development of portable surgical instruments and interchangeable blade systems.
The various blades have specially shaped attachment ends that clip securely into the accompanying metal handle, allowing different blade profiles to be fitted as required.
The set includes a selection of straight, curved, rounded and pointed blade forms, together with the handle components, all neatly arranged within the fitted case.
Every component is stamped with the number 88, indicating a consistent marking throughout the set, possibly relating to the manufacturer's pattern or assembly system. The inside of the case lid also bears a small stamped number 2.
The rectangular metal carrying case has rounded corners, a hinged lid, two fastening clips and an ingenious internal arrangement of retaining brackets and spring straps to hold the instruments securely.

Historical Interest During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, medical instrument manufacturers developed increasingly compact and practical surgical equipment.
Interchangeable blade systems enabled several differently shaped surgical instruments to be accommodated within a small portable case, an arrangement particularly suited to travelling medical practitioners and the requirements of early 20th-century medicine.
This complete set is an interesting example of historical medical instrument design, retaining its original-style interchangeable mechanism and matching numbered components.
An appealing addition to a collection of antique medical equipment, historical surgical instruments, medical memorabilia or early scientific and technological curiosities.
