A high-quality mid-19th-century English Victorian sewing (work) box dating from around 1850–1870. A satinwood veneered case, vibrant green silk/velvet interior, and complete suite of mother-of-pearl sewing implements—including ornately carved scissors, thimble, bodkin, thread winders, and etui items— a high quality luxury item from almost 200 years ago having retained the original contents in good order and without replacement items.
The interior is lined with green leather with a green silk cover, removable fitted trays, one with a pin cushion, beneath there is a large recess for cotton reels and fabric. The tools are hand carved and turned mother of pearl, artisan made to an exceptional quality; three of the items bear an enamel floral motif. The lid has a removable cover behind which is a concertina leather storage section for patterns.
The case measures 27 x 19 x 9.5cm (10.63" x 7.48" x 3.74").
