A parquetry inlaid writing box with matching parquetry inlaid letter knife. The parquetry design is geometric inlay of the “tumbling block” or “cube” pattern and with exquisitely detailed mosaic banding. Dating from the mid to later 19th century this is a rare example being smaller in size and retaining the original matching letter knife, inkwell, key with working lock and the original burgundy velvet desk surface.
A beautiful, and at this size, rare, writing box that is a beautiful decorative item as well as remaining functional.
In good solid condition with minor edge losses to the veneer on the front left hand corner and smaller elsewhere.
It originated in Europe in the 17th century, famously at the Palace of Versailles, and used different wood species and colours to create intricate, repeating designs such as herringbone and basketweave, most commonly for flooring, but also for paneling and other decorative surfaces.
