Antique glass hip flask, leather wrapped and with a silver plated cup, some light scratches to the silver plate. Late 19th century. The flask has the maker's stamp to the base, Daniel & Arter, for a little more about them, see below. The leather is in very nice condition, the top screws on and off and there is a cork stopper inside the lid. The cup slides on and off comfortably and there is a ridge in the centre of the glass as the divider between the cup and the leather.
A great example of 19th century sophistication and craftsmanship this distinguished piece captures the essence of a bygone era when gentlemen carried such refined accessories for discrete refreshment, an essential accompaniment to any outdoor sporting pursuit.
Daniel & Arter was established in Birmingham in the late 19th century (the first known sterling silver hallmark was entered in Birmingham Assay Office in 1882). The founders were Thomas Henry Daniel (died 1897) and Thomas Richard Arter (died c. 1915) and was active at Globe Nevada Silver Works, Highgate Street, Birmingham.
Measurements: 13.5cm tall (approximately 5.3 inches).
This is a genuine antique piece showing natural signs of age and use that only enhance its authentic character. The patina and gentle wear are testament to its genuine antique origins.
