Antique Howe Electrotherapy Machine, Liverpool c.1910, Wooden Cased Faradic Apparatus with Electrodes.

An intriguing early 20th-century portable faradic electrotherapy machine, bearing the maker’s plaque for the “Howe” Electrical Engineering Co., Liverpool, Made in England.

Dating approximately to 1900–1920, this apparatus offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of electrical medicine. Machines of this type used a battery-powered induction coil to generate electrical pulses, applied through electrodes for stimulation of muscles and nerves.

The instrument is housed in a polished wooden carrying case with a leather handle, catches, purple velvet lining inside the lid and a hinged side compartment. Opening the lid reveals the cylindrical induction coil, adjustable contact mechanism, lever switch and electrical terminals marked “P” and “S”, denoting the primary and secondary outputs.

Included are two cylindrical metal hand-grip electrodes, connecting leads and a wooden-handled electrode fitting, as shown in the photographs. The case also bears three stamped inscriptions along the top edges reading' J. F. Hurd'.

An appealing piece for a collector of antique scientific instruments, historical medical equipment or early electrical technology. The exposed mechanism and period wooden case make a distinctive cabinet display.

Condition: Age-related scratches, marks and wear to the case, with some chips and losses around the lid edges. The leather handle shows ageing, the metal fittings have tarnish and plating wear, and the connecting leads show fraying and deterioration. Completeness is not guaranteed. No battery is included, and the apparatus is offered as untested, with no claim that it operates.

Sold as a historical collectible for display or study, not for medical use.

Please examine the photographs carefully; the sale includes the machine, case and accessories pictured.
