A late 19th century mahogany cased set of brass drawing instruments by "Coombes." These sets were used by engineers, architects, naval draughtsmen, and surveyors. J. Coombes was an optician and instrument maker active in Devonport (Plymouth), England, from the mid-19th century into the early 20th century, they supplied drawing instruments to Admiralty clients which, given their their Devonport location, fits with a naval connection for this set. The set is complete and in good condition, there is some wear to the top of the ferrule of the dip pen holder. The case measures 20cm in width and the cartouche is vacant. The inside lid is blue felt lined and houses a ship’s curve (sometimes called a French curve, ship’s spline, or sweep). These templates were used by draughtsmen, naval architects, and engineers in the 19th century to draw smooth, flowing curves. The curve and the base are marked with the owners name 'P. Harris".
