Antique European Polychrome Wooden Madonna and Child – 18th Century

An evocative antique Continental European ecclesiastical or devotional sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary and Christ Child, estimated to from the 18th century, with a likely origin in the Alpine regions of southern Germany or Austria. Standing 27.2 cm (10.7 inches) high, this beautifully aged religious figure is hand-carved from a lightweight limewood, and retains fascinating remnants of historic polychrome decoration.

The Virgin Mary is depicted standing upon a moulded rectangular pedestal, her veiled head inclined gently towards the infant Christ, whom she supports upon her left arm. The Child holds a globus or orb, an established symbol of Christ's sovereignty over the world. The Virgin wears a long, flowing mantle, with deeply carved folds sweeping across the front of the figure. Beneath the darkened surface are surviving passages of ochre, reddish-brown and golden-coloured decoration, suggesting a once more richly painted appearance.

Historical background Carved and polychromed wooden figures of the Madonna and Child formed an important part of European Catholic religious art for centuries. Such sculptures were produced by ecclesiastical artisans for display in churches, chapels, convents and private devotional settings. Smaller examples, such as this figure, were particularly suitable for side altars, household shrines and private oratories. The carving's traditional construction, surviving decorative layers and established Christian iconography are consistent with this long tradition of European devotional sculpture.

Its precise original setting is unknown, although its size suggests that it may have been intended for a relatively intimate devotional space.

It retains remnants of historic painted decoration, with areas of ochre, reddish-brown and dark colouring, together with possible gilding or imitation gilding.

The underside of the pedestal reveals a recessed area and an old metal fixing. A wooden wedge appears to have been inserted subsequently to strengthen the attachment.

The darkened finish may include later varnish or overpainting, while earlier decorative layers remain visible in worn areas.
