A fascinating and rare survivor of Victorian dental innovation: the Claudius Ash & Sons "Self-Filling" Syringe. Shown here in the page from the Ash dental catalogue of 1875, this instrument represents a major leap in 19th-century clinical efficiency.
The syringe features a high-tension spiral spring. By depressing the plunger and releasing it, the vacuum created by the spring automatically draws liquid into the barrel, allowing the dentist to operate the tool one-handed.
Condition & Features:
Mechanically Sound: The spring action is in good working order, with a strong return and smooth plunger movement.
Original Patina: The instrument is in an "as-found" condition with an honest, aged tarnish. The metal remains solid with no significant corrosion or seized parts.
Maker’s Mark: Bears the prestigious Claudius Ash & Sons branding, the hallmark of quality in 19th-century British dentistry.
This is a premier "gadget" instrument for a medical collector. While many standard syringes survive, these mechanical self-filling models are significantly harder to find, especially in working condition.
The syringe measures 20cm (8") in length.
This item is offered strictly as a curio/collectable only.
