This authentic 18th-century vellum legal document is a formal mortgage indenture dated the 25th of April, 1768, during the reign of King George III. Written by hand with exquisite penmanship, the indenture features an ornate calligraphic top margin, a blue revenue stamp, and a beautifully preserved red wax seal alongside the rare "his mark" signature (an "M" style mark) of William Cope.

The Transaction: A mortgage agreement for the principal sum of fifty pounds made between William Cope of Uttoxeter in the County of Stafford, yeoman (of the one part), and Jonar Dawkins (or Joan Dawkins) of Burslem in the said county, gentleman (of the other part).
 
The Property: Details two closes, pieces, or parcels of land situated, lying, and being in Donston (Dunston) and in the parish of Penkridge in the County of Stafford, previously part of the estate of Thomas Price and late in the holding of Thomas Wood.
 
Historical Presentation: The reverse panel features contemporary docket inscriptions detailing the assignment of mortgage, a subsequent repayment receipt dated May 2nd, 1789, matching signatures, and witness attestations by John Fenton and Tho. Cope.
A remarkable and complete artifact of Georgian legal history, offering unique genealogical and local Staffordshire provenance ideal for framing or collection.
