An antique military Tracheotomy field set dating from the 19th century. The set contains a comprehensive range of instruments including:

 

Five silver Cannulae with their inserts, two marked "Mayer & Meltzer", two Mayer & Co and another "Down Brothers", the catalogue page showing these items is from the Down Brothers surgical instrument catalogue for 1890, Down Brothers were distributors for Mayer & Co'.

 

Three plated brass handled Cannulae marked for Mayer & Co.

 

Two further brass handled Cannulae marked for Mayer & Co' with silver sleeves.

 

Four Tracheotomy hooks.

 

Four pairs of Forceps, one spring loaded and marked Mayer & Phelps and so a later addition.

 

Silver was used for such instruments because of it's antiseptic properties.

 

The roll measures 44 x 60cm (17.32" x 23.62") when open and flat.
