A large antique hand carved wooden horse in the Tang Dynasty style, gesso on wood and polychrome decorated. The is a substantial statement piece, suited to either an antique or contemporary interior.

Tang horses are among the most famous works of Chinese art, it was during the golden age of the Tang dynasty (618-907), one of China’s most cosmopolitan periods, that the horse ascended to it's iconic status. War horses were the pride of the Dynasty, sculptural horse studies such as these, with the stylised arched neck, pricked ears, and heavy torso, convey confidence, distinction and charm, they were originally fashioned from clay.

The horse is in good solid condition but with chips to the gesso in places, most notably to the base. The horse stands flat and level but the base is warped.

The horse stands 71.5cm (28") high, 78cm (30.75") from nose to tail and 23cm (9") wide.
