A very large family Bible from the late 18th or very early 19th century, so Georgian. It leather bound with gilt tooling on substantial boards and marbled inside covers.
The title page reads: "The Holy Bible with a complete Commentary Selected from the Writings of Brown, Henry, Clark, Burke, Scott and other eminent commentators by the Rev. J. Fleetwood Embellished, with Elegant Engravings Birmingham. Printed & Published by W. Suffield & Co." It is the complete Old and New Testaments and includes the Apocrypha, which ceased to be included in any Bibles after the early 19th century.
The Bible is in tight, firm condition, complete and with clear text although there is substantial foxing throughout, there are a number of engravings.
A fascinating and rare historical document the text and content as relevant and usable as it was over 200 years ago when printed.
The Bible is substantial measuring 44 x 29 x 9cm (17.32" x 11.42" x 3.54") and weighs 7.8kg (17.2lbs).
