Surgical Mallet used during amputation to sever bone. The Mallet is by Mayer & Co' of London. The Hammer measures 15.2cm (6") in length and is surprisingly weighty at 998 grams (2.2lbs). The Mallet is made from solid copper which was originally plated with either silver or nickel, traces of which can still be seen. This example has been well used but remains solid and robust, it dates from the 19th century and we include a page from a surgical instruments catalogue of the time, showing the Mallet.
