Bible box dating from the late 17th century, over 300 years old. Fashioned from English oak, and of course hand carved, it has a hinged lid, notched borders and the front with a guilloche carved frieze, there is an iron lock plate, without key. The patina is beautiful, a product of great age, the hinges are solid and likely a later addition.
The Bible would have been the centre of every home, used daily and the central pillar of family life and often also a place of record for the family tree. A Bible box was a statement of respect and reverence as well as a practical solution to caring for the Bible.
An artisan work which could still serve for it's original purpose or a perhaps statement piece or storage space which would complement a variety of living spaces from classic to contemporary.
The Bible shown is for style and context and not included in the sale.
