An early medical irrigation or enema syringe, sometimes also referred to as a douche or wound irrigation syringe. It could have served for providing enemas in both domestic and hospital settings, for cleaning wounds and body cavities and less commonly for bladder irrigation. Manufactured by May & Son & Sons and bearing their makers plaque and dating from the late 19th century. It was originally chromed, most now having worn away to reveal the brass base. The finger rings and thumb rest were in place to allow precise delivery. The syringe measures 32cm (12.5") in length.
