An antique field syringe by Down Brothers of London, the syringe is a Record syringe of glass and steel and with a metal plunger, in good order. The "Record" syringe (also known as the Rekordspritze) was invented in 1906 by the Berlin instrument maker Dewitt & Herz. This syringe was popular for its dependability, lack of leakage and jamming, and ease of dismantling for sterilisation. It was one of the first glass and metal syringes of its time, this example likely dates from around 1920. Unusually it comes in a robust plated brass case with a screw cap, the lip on the top of the syringe sits neatly on the top of the inside of the case thus protecting the needle and allowing the syringe to be carried with the needle fitted, so for field use. The syringe is marked "Record British Made" and the case "Down London".

Down Brothers was a British company specialising in medical instrument making, particularly for ear, nose, and throat surgery. They operated in London, Sheffield, Scotland, Canada, the United States, Australia, and Ireland. The company was founded in 1879 by Arthur Down.

The case measures 15.5cm (6")in length.
