A magnificent Victorian family Bible: Brown’s Self‑Interpreting Family Bible, Containing the Old and New Testaments by Rev. John Brown, D.D., this edition published by Edward Slater, 2 Green Street, East Parade, Bradford. Lavishly produced, it has gilt‑edged pages, heavy leather covers and ornate brass corner pieces and clasps.

Inside are numerous full‑page chromolithograph illustrations on thick paper, including vivid scenes such as “David Playing Before the Ark” and “Jael Killeth Sisera,” interleaved within the biblical text. The text follows the Authorised (King James) Version with Brown’s extensive marginal references, explanations and devotional notes, designed for family worship and study.

Condition
Well‑used but attractive antique condition. The leather boards show rubbing and scuffs; the brass clasps are secure and functioning and the brass edging remains intact. The heavy text block is generally sound with some foxing and age toning to pages and plates, as usual for a Bible of this age.
