Antique obstetrical birthing forceps manufactured by Fannin Dublin dating from around 1870. The handles are fashioned from carved Ebony, the cross hatched grips are a nice feature, and the forceps Stainless Steel. The two forceps slot together, the metalwork is good and solid but there are some minor marks and tarnishing in places, the ebony is in very good condition. When closed they measure 36 x 9 x 6.5cm (14" x 3 1/2" x 2 1/2").
Obstetric forceps are designed to fit around the baby's head to work with the contractions to ease the baby from the birth canal, they are rarely used today.
Fannin were established in 1829 and remain in business today.
