An antique Delafoy Aspirator a system designed for relieving fluid build up in the chest cavity (pleural effusions) and abscesses, it was a significant surgical advance at the time. It was invented in 1869 by the French physician Georges Dieulafoy. The introduction of Dieulafoy's aspirator was a big step forwards affording a safe and practical method of giving temporary relief, by tapping the bladder suprapubically leading to the end of the dangerous practice of Trocar bladder drainage.  Medical equipment.

This example is in a leather case and is complete, the needles are retained on a felt board which lifts out to reveal the tubing and glass tube below as well as spare needle cleaning wires held in a glass tube underneath the base.  The case has a padded silk lid and the base is leather lined all in matching purple. The syringe is made from nickel plated brass with wear to the nickel plating, the plunger works and the top unscrews. The bulb above the two valves at the base of the syringe are marked "A" and "F" on both sides to indicate how the tubes should be attached. The lid bears the retailers label in this case Millikin & Lawley of 67 & 68 Chandos Street London. Millikin & Lawley  was a prominent retailer of medical, scientific, and optical instruments from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. Their stock expanded over time to include not only medical and surgical instruments but also items like microscopes, skeletons, magic tricks, and scientific curiosities
