A sextant, engraved "Wilfred O'Whites Nautical Instruments, Boston USA No 1156" and "United States Shipping Board". This is a magnificent example in beautiful condition. The sextant is presented in it's original oak case with a vacant brass cartouche and a campaign style side handle, accessory components sit in their fittings, the key fits but does not turn the lock. A card mounted certificate in the lid from The National Physical Laboratory confirms the date as May 1918 and the maker as Wilfred O'White. Wilfred O'White was born in Melbourne, Australia, he immigrated to the United States in 1898 and married Ruth Eldridge, whose father was George Eldridge, known for charting the first tide and current tables in the U.S. Wilfred O'White & Sons specialised in producing and supplying high-quality nautical instruments such as sextants, compasses, and binnacles, which were essential for maritime navigation. Their products were widely used by mariners. Also included here is a receipt of sale dated 1999, also a label for T. S. & J. D. Negus Nautical Instruments Makers New York, this was Thomas S. Negus and John D. Negus one of America’s most respected nautical instrument manufacturers during a time when ocean navigation required the highest precision. Their legacy lives on in maritime museums, collections, and naval history.
