A hand carved antique bone Barleycorn chess set in it's box with key (the key does not work the lock). The box decor is an inlaid parquetry chessboard both centered on top and as the keyhole escutcheon. The white chess pieces are natural bone and the red, dyed bone. The King stands 9.5cm (3.75") high and the base 2.75cm (1.08"), in diameter.
The white players are a complete set, generally good condition but with marks, the Knights and one pawn have slightly wider bases with more rings so likely replacements. The red players are complete except for one Knight, the other Knight similarly has a wider base, some of the pieces have been re-dyed, notably the base for the King, the Knight and two Pawns. Small chip to the box veneer on one corner.
The box measures 27 x 20 x 12cm.
