An original Mackenzie tonsillotome (tonsil guillotine)  manufactured by the esteemed surgical instrument makers Allen & Hanburys of London, a striking example of Victorian-era surgical history. Developed as a method to excise infected tonsils in a single swift motion, this instrument represents a fascinating period in medical history before modern tonsillectomy techniques caused the guillotine to fall out of favour in the early 20th century and before materials such as ebony and bone were permanently replaced by stainless steel which could be effectively sterilised. 
 
The maker's mark is clearly stamped, "ALLEN & HANBURYS LONDON" on the steel body, the instrument has a steel body and a finely carved, fluted ebony handle; an unusual feature is the curved steel shape allowing improved visual access.  The instrument features a sliding blade mechanism and fully dismantles, allowing the handle to be unscrewed from the body, it is in sound condition with age-appropriate marks including light surface darkening in places on the steel, which authentically reflects its age and use.  
 
This piece is an ideal acquisition for collectors of historical medical instruments, macabre oddities, or surgical history enthusiasts.
