A charming and authentic piece of chess history, a 19th-century English chess set carved in the traditional "St. George" pattern, fashioned from contrasting natural boxwood and rich dark ebony. Housed in its original antique sliding-lid wooden storage box, this set represents a classic era of British board gaming before the universal dominance of the Staunton pattern in 1849.

The Design & Heritage:
The St. George Pattern was named after and popularised by the prestigious St. George's Chess Club of London during the Victorian era, this style was widely favoured for club and competitive play.

Distinctive Silhouettes of the pieces characterised by multi-turned, ringed-collar bodies, open-work slotted bishops, stately tiered rooks (castles), and characteristically hand-carved knight pieces showing wonderful individual artisanal detail.

The King stands proudly at 7.2 cm high, making this a delightful, highly playable parlour or mid-sized antique set.

Condition & Details:
Materials: Crafted from genuine boxwood (light side) and deep ebony hardwood (dark side) with a warm, authentic historic patina.
