A beautifully preserved Georgian Apocrypha, printed in Edinburgh in 1800 by J. H. Blair and J. Bruce and bound in handsome contemporary full straight‑grain morocco with gilt detailing throughout.
This substantial quarto‑format volume was produced at the height of Scotland’s Bible‑printing trade and offers the complete Apocryphal books in clear, readable type with generous margins. The binding is original to the period: straight‑grain morocco boards with decorative gilt borders, gilt turn‑ins and marbled endpapers, a style strongly associated with quality devotional books of the late 18th and very early 19th century.Condition is very good for its age. The morocco shows honest rubbing and scuff marks to the edges and corners, but the boards are sound and the volume remains tightly bound with no loose gatherings. Internally the pages are clean and bright with only light age‑toning and the odd small spot, far better than commonly encountered in working Bibles of this period. There are no intrusive annotations, just the expected period inscriptions to the endpapers, giving the book a pleasing sense of provenance without distracting from the text.
This is an ideal piece for: collectors of early Bible and Apocrypha printings, lovers of fine bindings, and anyone seeking a distinctive display volume for a study, sacristy or reading room. The combination of an uncommon Scottish imprint, complete Apocryphal text and original morocco binding makes this a desirable survivor from the Georgian book trade.
The book measures 28 x 22.5cm (11" x 8.86").
